I would love to see a federated hospitality platform emerge. Maybe using activity pub and those kind of vocabularies.
Trust is highly important in hospex and the instance you choose could be the thing you put your trust in. So can have instances entirely run by and for non-male persons, or any other groups.
Would also like allowlist only federation, so trust is explicit. And bake in democratic features too.
Oh it could be so cool!
This isn't new but Nadia Eghbal gave a super talk at the LongNow Foundation about her book Working in Public: The Making and Maintenance of Open Source Software.
She argues that open source software is not simply a public good but also operates as a commons. This might sound obvious, but it was interesting to hear how she arrives there and her point that Steward might be a better name than Maintainer.
There's a small chance this is one of the biggest findings in scientific history: turns out there's things that look surprisingly like tiny fungal puffballs on Mars, and they seem to grow.
Also, there seems to be something that looks like fungal growths on on rovers. Which as the authors' point out, could easily be contamination from earth. Even that would be a finding with huge implications: life growing on another planet. Sure, life we introduced. But still!
Last Thursday we demonstrated #ActivityPub to European & national administrations with a live install & demonstration of #peertube and #mastodon by @how for the European Data Protection Supervisor (which aims to join the fediverse soon!). In case you missed it, here is the recording -> https://conf.tube/videos/watch/e4cc80ba-f44d-4294-8812-e409f221f5ad?start=0s From the first install commands to sharing videos, moderating & comments in a little more than half an hour 🤩
Since a recent update, Bookwyrm can also import books from @inventaire to diversify the search results a bit. Other book sources are https://openlibrary.org/ as well as other Bookwyrm instances, but you can also create books and editions in Bookwyrm itself. More connected sources are planned, stay tuned!
By acting compassionately we reduce the world’s net suffering, and defiantly rehabilitate the world. It is an alchemical act that transforms pain into beauty. This is good. This is beautiful.
To not transform our suffering and instead transmit our pain to others, in the form of abuse, torture, hatred, misanthropy, cynicism, blaming and victimhood, compounds the world’s suffering. Most sin is simply one person’s suffering passed on to another. This is not good. This is not beautiful. 2/3
What do we do with suffering? As far as I can see, we have two choices—we either transform our suffering into something else, or we hold on to it, and eventually pass it on.
In order to transform our pain, we must acknowledge that all people suffer. By understanding that suffering is the universal unifying force, we can see people more compassionately, and this goes some way toward helping us forgive the world and ourselves. 1/3
